This week, I have some exciting stories for you from the world of privacy. 

Among the top stories is the IAPP’s fifth Annual Privacy Report that revealed that corporate spending on managing privacy risks had increased dramatically over the past year, assuming budgets will continue to rise even more in the coming year. 

Also, the Global Cybercrime Report listed the countries which are most at risk online while public and private sector efforts to control the digital Wild West have made it more difficult for online scammers in some ways. 

Furthermore, Vodafone was charged by the Spanish data protection regulators for violating the GDPR and LSSI. Also, the ICO fines HIV Scotland overexposing individuals’ sensitive information. 

And finally, the US Senator announced the latest bill that claims to secure its inhabitants’ privacy rights in a manageable way to collect and process the AI-collected data.

IAPP Report: Privacy spend rising, with further growth expected 

The Annual Privacy Governance Report by the International Association of Privacy Professionals and Big Four firm EY showed that average spending on privacy tech vendors in the marketplace has increased by 29% in 2021 compared to the previous years. Over the last five years, privacy technology has undergone a paradigm shift that has influenced everything from developing privacy tech tools to the attitude toward privacy tech companies. Global Cybercrime Report: which countries are most at risk online? 

A recent analysis by anti-fraud vendor SEON highlighted the wide range of risks that internet users face worldwide. The Data was collected from the National Cyber Security Index (NCSI) and the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2020, which ranked 100 countries based on their cybersecurity indices and indicators. In addition, the study further reveals that the percentage of data breaches is increasing where the practice is becoming more common compared to the earlier reports. Read Story

AEPD fines Vodafone €70,000 for violating GDPR and LSSI

The Spanish data protection authority (‘AEPD’) issued a decision fining Vodafone Spain SAU €70,000 for violating Article 21 of the GDPR 2016/679 and Article 21 of the Law No. 34/2002, of July 11, 2002, on Information Society Services and Electronic Commerce (‘LSSI’). Moreover, the decision declared that Vodafone’s failure to comply with its obligation to manage the claimant’s right of the opposition resulted in a breach of Article 21 of the General Data Protection Regulations (‘GDPR’). ICO fines HIV Scotland £10,000 for email data breach

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined HIV Scotland £10,000 on violations of Articles 5(1)(f), 32(1), and 32(2) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (‘UK GDPR’), after the charity sent out an email containing the personal details of dozens of people. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) issued the penalty after a probe, which could have resulted in assumptions about their HIV status or risk. Read Story 

The latest US Senate Bill seeks to secure the processing of AI-Data.

Last week, U.S. Senator Gary Peters introduced Senate Bill (‘SB’) 3035, commonly known as the Government Ownership and Oversight of Data in Artificial Intelligence Act (‘GOOD AI’), a bipartisan bill to establish the Artificial Intelligence Hygiene Working Group and for other purposes. He confirmed that the data collected by the technology is secure and used correctly and does not violate American privacy and rights. This bipartisan law will ensure that federal contractors use artificial intelligence correctly and for the benefit of the public. Read Story
